Thousands of protesters in Majorca took to the streets of the island’s capital over the weekend to voice their concerns about the impact of increased tourism on their beloved home. The demonstrators marched through Palma’s Weyler Square, holding banners with messages like “We don’t want an island of cement” and “Tourism, yes but not like this.”
The protest, organized by Banc del Temps, drew more than 15,000 people who chanted “tourists go home” as they made their way through the city. The demonstration comes on the heels of a similar protest in Ibiza, where locals expressed their frustration with the negative effects of mass tourism.
One of the banners carried by the campaigners had a provocative message: “Salvem Mallorca, guiris arruix,” which translates to “Let’s save Majorca, foreigners out.” The protest aimed to highlight the issue of uncontrolled tourism and its impact on the local community.
Despite the backlash from some holidaymakers who were caught off guard by the protest, the organizers have issued an apology for any inconvenience caused. However, they have also vowed to continue their efforts until concrete measures are taken to address their concerns.
The manifesto released by Banc del Temps includes demands such as restricting property purchases to residents who have lived in the Balearic Islands for at least five years and imposing a moratorium on holiday rentals. The protesters are calling for a more sustainable approach to tourism that prioritizes the well-being of the local population.
As tensions rise between locals and tourists in popular destinations like Majorca and Ibiza, the debate over the future of tourism in these areas continues to intensify. The protesters are determined to make their voices heard and push for change to protect their communities from the negative impacts of mass tourism.
