Prysmian Completes Installation of Export Cables for Eolmed Floating Wind Farm

Italian cable maker Prysmian has successfully completed the installation of export cables for the 30 MW Eolmed floating wind farm off the coast of France. The project, secured in 2021 with a contract from the French TSO Réseau de Transport d’Électricité (RTE), involved the engineering, procurement, construction, and installation of a submarine power cable system.

Prysmian was tasked with designing, supplying, installing, terminating, testing, and commissioning a 23 km long 66 kV static three-core export submarine cable with EPR insulation, as well as a 66 kV dynamic submarine export tail. These cables will connect the onshore grid to the floating electrical hub of the Eolmed wind farm.

This project marks Prysmian’s second EPCI turnkey project for dynamic cable systems, further solidifying its position in the floating offshore wind farm market. Alberto Boffelli, COO Transmission at Prysmian, highlighted the company’s expertise and technologies in developing submarine cables for greener power grids worldwide.

The Eolmed project, led by Qair, TotalEnergies, and BW Ideol, is one of the first floating wind farm projects in the Mediterranean. It will feature three 10 MW-rated wind turbines supplied by Vestas, capable of producing over 110 million kWh/year by 2025, equivalent to the electricity consumption of 50,000 inhabitants.

Bourbon Services recently completed the installation of a floating electrical hub at the Eolmed wind farm, marking a significant milestone in the project’s development. The completion of the export cables brings the Eolmed floating wind farm one step closer to providing clean and sustainable energy to the region.
