Public News Service: Funding Early Literacy Initiatives in Preparation

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Oregon is making strides in early childhood learning and literacy with the distribution of funds through the Early Literacy Success Initiative. Lawmakers passed this initiative in 2023 in response to only half of the state’s students being proficient in reading by third grade. School districts have applied for grants with the Oregon Department of Education, and funds are expected to be distributed soon.

Marina Merrill, director of research and strategy at the Children’s Institute, emphasized the importance of investing in early childhood education, as 90% of a child’s brain is developed by the age of five. Grant applications from over 200 districts and charter schools have focused on enhancing early literacy through professional development and coaching.

The Children’s Institute is hosting a webinar to discuss the state’s investments and evidence-based early learning practices. Herb Turner, founder of ANALYTICA, will participate in the webinar and highlighted the significance of evidence-based practices in improving student outcomes.

Cesiah Vega-Lopez, a pre-k teacher at Echo Shaw Elementary, shared her experience using different practices to teach literacy, emphasizing the critical role of early language development in a child’s overall learning trajectory.

The focus on early childhood education in Oregon is commendable, with an emphasis on evidence-based practices and strategies to support young learners. The investments in early literacy are expected to have a positive impact on students’ academic success and overall development.
