Purdue’s Zach Edey calls for change in NIL rules for foreign players

Purdue men’s basketball star Zach Edey has been dominating the court, but he’s facing a different kind of challenge off the court. Despite being a two-time AP Player of the Year award winner, Edey is unable to cash in on name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals in the U.S. due to his Canadian nationality.

Standing at an impressive 7-foot-4, Edey expressed his frustration at missing out on potential earnings, stating, “I hope they change it in the future.” He emphasized the need for U.S. laws to evolve to allow international student-athletes like himself to benefit from NIL deals.

Edey is not alone in his predicament. Gonzaga Bulldogs star Ryan Nembhard and Purdue teammate Luka Krajnovic, both hailing from Canada and Croatia respectively, have also voiced their hopes for change in the current regulations.

Teammate Will Berg, a 7-foot-2 center from Sweden, is facing similar restrictions on NIL deals. Despite the challenges, the Purdue team remains focused on their Final Four matchup against N.C. State, aiming to secure a spot in the national championship game.

As Edey and his international teammates continue to excel on the court, they are also advocating for a fair opportunity to benefit from their hard work and talent through NIL deals. The issue highlights the need for a more inclusive approach to allow all student-athletes to capitalize on their success, regardless of their nationality.
