QR Code Tickets to be Introduced by March 2027 by Rail Operators in Eastern Japan

Commuters in eastern Japan are in for a major change as East Japan Railway (JR East) and seven other railway operators announced the introduction of a new QR code ticketing system by March 2027. This move is not only aimed at making the ticketing system more sustainable and efficient but also at reducing recycling costs and machine errors, the companies revealed in a joint statement on Wednesday.

Currently, passengers using the train system have to deal with the hassle of paper tickets with black magnetic layers, which need to be inserted into the ticket gate for entry and exit. However, with the new paper QR code tickets, passengers will only need to scan the code at the ticket gate, eliminating ticket jams and reducing congestion and maintenance frequency.

Moreover, the shift to QR code tickets is not only more convenient for passengers but also environmentally friendly. Unlike magnetic tickets, the paper QR code tickets are easier to recycle as they do not require the separation of paper and metallic components before recycling.

The new system will be implemented by JR East and other major railway operators in the region, including Tokyo Monorail, Keisei Electric Railway, and Tobu Railway. This shared QR code ticketing system will replace the outdated magnetic paper tickets that have been in use since the late 1960s.

With the usage of magnetic tickets dwindling over the years, from 35% of fare revenue in 2007 to just 5-10% currently, the introduction of QR code tickets is a significant step towards modernizing the railway system in eastern Japan.
