Québec solidaire appoints Christine Labrie as interim co-spokesperson

In a surprising turn of events, Sherbrooke MNA Christine Labrie has been named the interim female co-spokesperson for Québec solidaire (QS) following the sudden departure of Émilise Lessard-Therrien. Labrie will hold this position until a successor is elected before the end of the year.

Labrie, who previously ran for the permanent co-spokesperson position last year against Lessard-Therrien, expressed her gratitude for the appointment, stating, “People know me and trust me.” The decision to appoint Labrie comes at a time when the left party is facing internal turmoil.

Lessard-Therrien resigned on Monday, citing the influence of the entourage of male co-spokesperson Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois on the party’s direction. Nadeau-Dubois, in response, called for reforms within the party to transform QS into a “government party.”

Labrie, who supports Nadeau-Dubois’ reform approach, emphasized the importance of addressing the issues within the party. She stated, “We are in a period of upheaval that is crucial for the future of things at Québec solidaire.”

The party’s National Co-ordinating Committee unanimously chose Labrie for the interim role, resolving a financial issue for the cash-strapped party as she is already paid by the National Assembly. However, under the party’s rules, Labrie will not be able to participate in the next election for co-spokesperson.

Labrie’s appointment marks a significant development in the leadership of QS, as she will work alongside Nadeau-Dubois until a female spokesperson is officially elected before the convention in November. The party is now faced with the task of navigating these changes and ensuring a smooth transition in leadership.
