The Austin Peay State University (APSU) softball team faced a tough day on Saturday as they dropped a pair of Atlantic Sun Conference contests to Queens by 4-2 and 7-2 finals at Cathi Maynard Park-Cheryl Holt Field.
In Game 1, the Governors fell behind early to the Royals, giving up runs in the first, third, and fifth innings. Mea Clark provided a spark for APSU with a home run in the fifth inning, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit. The Governors only managed one more hit in the game, resulting in a 4-2 loss.
Game 2 saw Queens jump out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning and adding to it throughout the game. APSU tried to rally with Kendyl Weinzapfel’s double and Clark’s RBI single in the second inning, but Queens continued to extend their lead. The Governors scored a late run in the seventh inning, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Queens’ 7-2 lead.
Despite the losses, there were some notable achievements for APSU. Kendyl Weinzapfel reached her 150th career hit, becoming the 18th player in program history to reach that milestone. The team also played their 450th game at Cathi Maynard Park-Cheryl Holt Field.
APSU will have a chance to bounce back as they conclude their series against Queens with a single game tomorrow at 1:00pm. Fans can catch all the action on ESPN+ or follow along on social media for updates.
