Ukrainian national team and Shakhtar Donetsk fullback Yukhym Konoplya recently sat down with Euronews to discuss Ukraine’s recent qualification for EURO 2024, the ongoing Russian invasion, and the impact of the war on football in the country.
In March, Ukraine secured their spot in EURO 2024 after defeating Iceland. This achievement holds special significance for a country that has been enduring Russia’s aggression for over two years. The tournament will not only provide a platform for Ukraine to showcase their talent on a global stage but also serve as a reminder of the ongoing conflict.
Konoplya emphasized the importance of qualification, stating that it was a victory not just for the team but for the entire nation, including the soldiers defending Ukraine. He highlighted the role of Ukrainian footballers in raising awareness about the war and keeping the international focus on the situation in their country.
The fullback also shared his personal experience of the war, recalling the difficulties faced by the Shakhtar Donetsk club and its members when they had to leave Donetsk in 2014. The constant relocations and separation from family members took a toll on everyone involved.
Konoplya discussed the “Heroes Never Die Program,” through which Ukrainian footballers support those fighting on the front lines by raising funds for essential materials. He called for continued unity and support from the international community to aid Ukraine in its struggle against Russia’s unjust war.
As Ukraine prepares to compete in EURO 2024, the country’s footballers are not only focused on the game but also on using their platform to raise awareness and support for their nation during this challenging time.
