BOSTON — Rafael Devers is on fire, and he’s not slowing down anytime soon. The Red Sox third baseman made history on Monday night by homering in his sixth consecutive game, setting a new team record. But Devers isn’t satisfied with just breaking records for the Red Sox; he has his sights set on some MLB history.
Devers’ two-run blast in the fourth inning of Boston’s 5-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays was a thing of beauty. Taking a 97 mph fastball from Tampa righty Taj Bradley, Devers sent the ball 382 feet into the left field stands at Tropicana Field for an opposite-field shot. The moment he made contact, Devers knew it was gone, and he celebrated with an epic bat flip.
With this feat, Devers joins an elite group of players who have homered in six straight games, including legends like Jimmie Foxx and Ted Williams. But Devers is aiming even higher, looking to match the MLB record of homering in eight straight games set by Ken Griffey Jr., Don Mattingly, and Dale Long.
Since returning from a knee injury on April 24, Devers has been on a tear, hitting .333 with eight homers, seven doubles, 18 RBI, and 18 runs scored. Despite his impressive numbers, Devers believes he can do even better and is determined to elevate his game.
As Devers continues to light up the scoreboard, the Red Sox offense is thriving, and the rest of baseball should be on high alert. With Devers in top form, Boston is a force to be reckoned with.
