Rare and Expensive Pineapple Selling for Almost $400 Gains Internet Fame

As we approach Memorial Day weekend and the start of summer, one particular fruit is making headlines for its hefty price tag. Fresh Del Monte has introduced the Rubyglow pineapple, a rare and exclusive fruit that is selling for a whopping $395.

This unique pineapple, a cross between a normal pineapple and a usually inedible Morada pineapple, features a striking ruby red outer shell with a yellow center. Previously only available in Asia, the Rubyglow pineapple has quickly gained popularity and has already sold out.

According to Melissa’s website, the Rubyglow pineapple is a rare gem that took 15 years to develop through meticulous cultivation and traditional crossbreeding. Fresh Del Monte has announced that only 5,000 pineapples will be available for purchase in 2024, with another 3,000 set to be available in 2025. The fruit is grown in Costa Rica.

Jesus Rodriguez Calvo, Del Monte’s SVP of North America sales, explained that the extreme exclusivity of the Rubyglow pineapple, with only a couple hundred making their way to North America, contributed to its quick sellout. There is already a waiting list for the next batch of this luxury fruit, with anticipated availability in early August and around the December holidays.

It remains to be seen if the price of the Rubyglow pineapple will increase even further, as its exclusivity continues to attract consumers willing to pay top dollar for this rare and delicious fruit.
