RCMP confirms fire posing explosion risk in Newfoundland town is now under control

The fires that prompted a state of emergency in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, have been brought under control, according to the RCMP. The town declared the state of emergency after the fires spread to an area containing explosive material, raising concerns of a potential explosion.

In a news release on Saturday, the RCMP confirmed that the fires are now under control, and there is no longer a risk of an explosion. Firefighters worked throughout the night to battle the blaze, which caused extensive damage to several commercial structures. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The Canadian Forces Base in Happy Valley-Goose Bay was also impacted by the state of emergency. Some streets remain inaccessible due to structural instability, winds, and lingering hot spots, the RCMP stated.

As a precautionary measure, the RCMP is advising homeowners not to return to their properties at this time. Residents are urged to stay at least a kilometer away from the affected area, which stretches from the end of the airport to the docks.

A fire scene investigator from the Fire Services Division of Justice and Public Safety is currently on-site to conduct further investigations. The RCMP expressed gratitude for the public’s cooperation and promised to provide updates as they become available.
