The Arizona sports community was left reeling after the news broke that the Arizona Coyotes would be moving to Salt Lake City. Fans and organizations alike expressed their disappointment and frustration with the decision.
The Arizona Diamondbacks Managing General Partner Ken Kendrick and President & CEO Derrick Hall released a joint statement expressing their sadness about the move, stating, “We firmly believe that we deserve and can support teams from each of the major sports and are troubled that a solution could not be found for all parties involved.”
The Arizona Cardinals also weighed in on the news, posting on social media, “Hockey belongs in the desert. Thank you for the memories Arizona Coyotes.” The Coyotes themselves changed their social media bio to “Hockey Belongs in Arizona #YotesForever,” showing their commitment to the state.
At the team’s final game at Mullett Arena, fans showed their discontent with signs and chants, expressing their love for the team and their disappointment in the relocation. Despite the emotional farewell, the Yotes closed out their 28-year run in the Valley with a 5-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers.
The NHL Board of Governors unanimously approved the $1.2 billion sale of the team to Utah Jazz owners Ryan and Ashley Smith. However, former owner Alex Meruelo remains committed to bringing NHL hockey back to Arizona within five years, with plans for a new arena and entertainment district.
While the move is a blow to Arizona sports fans, there is hope on the horizon for an expansion team if the new arena is built within the specified timeframe. The community remains hopeful for the return of NHL hockey to the Valley of the Sun.
