Read On Arizona and its partners offer youth reading education to combat pandemic-related literacy decline – Cronkite News

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Child literacy is a pressing concern in Arizona as recent data shows a decline in reading proficiency among third graders. According to the Center for the Future of Arizona, only 41% of third graders scored proficient or highly proficient in state assessment tests in 2023, a decrease from pre-pandemic levels. This falls short of the goal set by Arizona school districts to have 72% of third graders passing reading assessments by 2030.

Nonprofit organizations like Read On Arizona and Read On Tempe are working tirelessly to improve child literacy in the state. Read On Arizona focuses on reading development for children of all ages, partnering with schools and community organizations to ensure all kids reach their full reading potential. They emphasize early literacy outcomes and provide support for children from kindergarten to third grade.

In Tempe, Read On Tempe collaborates with various literacy-focused programs in the community to create a support network for students and families. Programs like the Triple P Positive Parenting Program, Tempe PRE preschool program, and the AARP Foundation Experience Corps provide resources and support for families to establish good reading habits and improve literacy skills.

Nicole Burner, a community lead for Read On Tempe, highlighted the impact of programs like the Helping Us Grow book club, which provides books and literacy kits to low-income families. By supporting families with resources and guidance, these programs aim to improve literacy outcomes for children in the community.

Moving forward, Burner hopes that continued collaboration and support from the community will lead to positive results for children in Tempe and beyond. With a focus on early literacy and community engagement, organizations like Read On Arizona and Read On Tempe are making strides in improving child literacy and ensuring a brighter future for Arizona’s youth.
