Mountlake Terrace Hawks’ softball team faced a heartbreaking loss in a thrilling game against Mount Vernon in the 3A District 1 tournament play-in game on Friday. The Hawks started strong with a 6-0 lead but Mount Vernon fought back, scoring 12 unanswered runs to take a 12-6 lead. The Hawks managed to tie the game at 15-15 in the sixth inning, but Mount Vernon scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth, ending the Hawks’ season with a 16-15 defeat.
Despite the loss, several Hawks players had standout performances. Bri Reyes went 4 for 5 with 3 doubles, a home run, 2 runs, and 6 RBIs. Amaya Johnson also had a strong game, going 3 for 4 with a walk, 2 doubles, a home run, 3 runs, and 3 RBIs. The Hawks finished the season with a 7-14 record.
In other sports news, the 3A Wesco South League Championships in track and field saw Shorecrest and Shorewood dominating the girls and boys team scores, respectively. In boys soccer, Shorewood defeated Edmonds-Woodway 2-1 in the 3A District 1 Championship game, avenging their only loss of the season. Both teams advanced to the state tournament.
On Saturday, Mountlake Terrace’s baseball team secured a 9-3 victory over Edmonds-Woodway in the 3A District 1 Championship game. The win marked the Hawks’ first district championship since 2012. Sophomore Owen Meek pitched a stellar game, allowing only one hit through five innings. Both teams will advance to the state tournament, with Mountlake Terrace facing the winner of Silas vs. Bishop Blanchet in the opening round.
