Record labels and Hollywood and music industry reach tentative agreement on AI protection deal

In a groundbreaking development for the entertainment industry, Hollywood performers and media professionals have struck a preliminary agreement with major record labels, including Warner Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment, setting a new standard for workers’ rights.

The tentative deal, spanning from 2021 to 2026, includes key provisions such as increased minimum salaries and protections against the intrusion of artificial intelligence (AI) in creative processes.

Led by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), representing around 160,000 actors and media experts, the accord garnered unanimous approval from the union’s executive committee, as announced on their official website.

The issue of AI’s influence on artistic integrity was a focal point during negotiations, with concerns about AI-generated music taking center stage. Last year’s discussions between SAG-AFTRA and major studios led to a historic contract in November after a lengthy strike.

Of particular importance in the talks was the music industry’s fight against AI-generated songs that mimic artists’ voices without their consent. The agreement with record labels now mandates explicit consent and fair compensation for any song featuring a digital replica of an artist’s voice, ensuring that terms like “artist” and “singer” are reserved for human performers.

Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator, stressed the importance of preserving genuine human expression in music. The agreement also includes improvements in health and retirement benefits, as well as a larger share of streaming revenue for workers.

The final vote by SAG-AFTRA members is expected in the coming weeks, signaling a crucial step towards better working conditions and fair pay for industry professionals.
