Record rain causes flooding at Dubai airport, disrupting flights in UAE

The state-run WAM news agency described the rain as a historic weather event, surpassing anything documented since 1949. While rain also fell in neighboring countries, the UAE was hit the hardest.

Speculation arose about cloud seeding, a technique used to induce rain, potentially contributing to the deluge. However, experts dismissed this idea, attributing the intense rainfall to a strong low-pressure system and thunderstorms. Climate change was also cited as a factor in the extreme weather patterns.

The airport faced significant challenges, with standing water on taxiways and limited transportation options for passengers. Flights were disrupted, and some aircraft were diverted to a secondary airfield. Recovery efforts were underway, but the CEO of the airport acknowledged the unprecedented nature of the situation.

In neighboring Oman, heavy rains led to tragic consequences, with at least 19 people reported dead, including schoolchildren swept away in floodwaters. The UAE also saw casualties, with one man losing his life in Ras al-Khaimah.

The UAE government took measures to address the aftermath of the storm, including pumping water from streets and highways, closing schools, and implementing remote work arrangements. The country, known for its arid climate, faces challenges in managing such rare and intense rainfall events.
