Recording Academy, BMI, and NMPA Sign Music Workplace Safety Pledge

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The 100 Percenters, a musicians’ advocacy group, has made a significant impact in the music industry by introducing a new pledge aimed at ensuring workplace safety. Several prominent music organizations, including the National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA), BMI, and the Recording Academy, have signed on to the pledge, known as the Safe Music Business pledge.

This groundbreaking agreement requires signatories to commit to keeping artists, songwriters, producers, and staff safe in their workplace and studio sessions. It also mandates reporting any instances of sexual harassment, intimidation, or violence and creating a safe space to support those who feel unsafe.

The pledge comes at a crucial time when safety concerns, particularly for women and non-binary creatives, are at the forefront of discussions in the male-dominated music industry. The 100 Percenters, founded by songwriter Tiffany Red, is dedicated to protecting marginalized creatives and professionals in the music business.

If a signatory violates the pledge, The 100 Percenters will engage in private conversations with company executives to address the issue and ensure accountability. The organization hopes that this pledge will lead to a safer and more inclusive work environment for all music industry professionals.

In a letter accompanying the announcement of the signatories, Tiffany Red highlighted recent allegations of abuse by music professionals like Sean “Diddy” Combs and Russell Simmons. The letter emphasizes the importance of addressing sexual misconduct and violence within the industry and commends the companies that have taken the pledge for their commitment to creating a safer work environment.
