Red Cross states that Rafah evacuations are not feasible in current conditions

In the midst of ongoing protests and tensions related to the war in Gaza, the head of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, has vowed to defend the agency against what he describes as “ferocious attacks” from critics.

Lazzarini expressed concern over the lack of empathy and understanding between supporters of both sides in the conflict, emphasizing the need for healing and compassion. He highlighted the unique level of attack UNRWA has faced in recent months, with 18 countries reviewing or freezing their contributions and calls for the agency’s dismantlement.

Despite the challenges, Lazzarini remains committed to protecting UNRWA and ensuring its vital services continue for Palestinian refugees. He emphasized the importance of empathy for both Israelis and Palestinians, as well as the need for a lasting political solution to the conflict.

The agency, which provides aid to millions of Palestinian refugees, has faced funding suspensions and allegations from Israeli authorities, leading to a crisis earlier this year. Lazzarini refuted claims that UNRWA perpetuates the refugee status of Palestinians, attributing it to the absence of a political solution.

As the agency grapples with attacks on its staff and operations, Lazzarini called for accountability for those responsible and urged for an independent investigation into incidents of disregard for UN premises and staff. He also welcomed recommendations from a recent report aimed at enhancing internal oversight and donor support.

Despite funding challenges, Lazzarini remains hopeful that the necessary support will be restored to UNRWA, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to neutrality and service provision. As concerns grow over health risks in Gaza, he stressed the importance of continued aid and protection for vulnerable populations in the region.
