Red Riders’ playoff run comes to an end after Game 3 defeat | Latest updates on News, Sports, and Employment opportunities

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Weir High softball team’s season came to a heartbreaking end on Wednesday as they fell to Keyser in the Class AA Region 1 Championship Series. Despite taking an early lead, the Red Riders were unable to hold on as Keyser rallied to win the deciding third game 3-1.

Weir High had a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after Eliza Utt scored on a wild pitch, but Keyser quickly responded with back-to-back sac flies in the fourth inning to take the lead. Despite several opportunities to tie the game, the Red Riders were unable to capitalize on their chances.

Keyser’s pitcher, Rylee Mangold, was dominant on the mound, allowing only two hits and striking out seven in a complete game performance. Utt also had a strong outing for Weir High, striking out eight in a complete game effort.

The loss was a tough pill to swallow for the Red Riders, who had high hopes of advancing to the state tournament. However, with no seniors on the team, the entire group will be back next season with a renewed sense of determination.

Head coach John Leary expressed his disappointment in the team’s performance, but also acknowledged their accomplishments throughout the season. Despite the bitter defeat, he hopes the players will use it as motivation to come back stronger next year.

Keyser’s victory in the series means they will advance to the state tournament, while Weir High’s season comes to an end with a record of 22-12. The Red Riders can take pride in their OVAC and sectional titles, but will be left wondering what could have been in the Region 1 Championship Series.
