Redefining masculinity: LGBTQ+ rugby club challenges stereotypes in contact sports

The Los Angeles Rebellion, a recreational rugby club, is gearing up for their upcoming match with intense training sessions at the Ferraro Fields in Griffith Park. With about 50 players on the field, the atmosphere is charged with energy and determination.

The players are divided into groups, with some focusing on scrums while others work on passing and breaking through defenders. The dedication and passion of the team are evident as they push themselves to the limit, leaving no stone unturned in their preparation.

What sets the Rebellion apart is their commitment to inclusivity. Most of the players identify as queer, and the club provides a safe space for them to enjoy the camaraderie of organized sports without the toxic masculinity often found in traditional sports settings.

Eric Anderson, the president of The Rebellion, emphasizes the importance of challenging stereotypes and assumptions about masculinity and femininity. The club has become a platform for queer individuals in Los Angeles to connect and build a community outside of the usual nightlife scene.

In a testament to their growth and success, the Rebellion will be representing Los Angeles at the Bingham Cup in Rome, where they will compete against 180 other inclusive clubs from around the world. For co-founder Gabriel Galluccio, the club represents a way to escape a tough environment and find acceptance through the sport of rugby.
