Reflecting on 35 Years of the Caribbean Tourism Organization: How the Destination is Evolving

The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) is celebrating its 35th anniversary with a theme of “Connecting the Globe, Celebrating Diversity.” The organization, which represents 24 English-, French-, and Dutch-speaking destinations, is highlighting multiple industry events to enhance its positioning in the marketplace.

In an interview with Dona Regis-Prosper, the secretary-general and CEO of the CTO, she reflected on the evolution of tourism in the region. Despite facing challenges such as storms, hurricanes, and the COVID-19 pandemic, Caribbean tourism has shown resilience and confidence. The effective leadership of regional health bodies and close cooperation between health and tourism departments have played a crucial role in the recovery of the sector.

Over the past 35 years, the CTO has evolved to represent the interests of Caribbean governments in the tourism sector. The organization has led initiatives for the successful recovery of the region post-COVID-19 and is now undertaking a “Revitalization of the Caribbean Tourism Organization” project to transform its role in the future development of the industry.

The CTO is focused on expanding global connections for Caribbean destinations, including strengthening ties with Africa and Latin America. Through various initiatives and events, such as the upcoming Caribbean Conference on Sustainable Tourism Development and Caribbean Week in New York, the organization aims to showcase the diversity of the Caribbean region and its offerings.

Looking ahead, the key priorities and objectives of the CTO include ensuring resident participation in development planning, promoting sustainable growth, and encouraging youth to pursue careers in tourism. Travel advisors are also seen as crucial in maintaining the health of the tourism sector by providing specialized experience and guidance to travelers.
