Remains of four students who drowned in Russian river being repatriated to India

Four Indian medical students tragically lost their lives in a drowning incident in Russia, with their bodies now being flown back to India for their final rites. The victims, two boys and two girls aged 18 to 20, were studying at Novgorod State University in Veliky Novgorod.

The incident occurred near St. Petersburg, where a female student got into trouble while wading in the river Volkhov, prompting her companions to try and save her. Tragically, four of them ended up drowning in the process.

Local authorities in Russia, along with the Indian mission, are working diligently to expedite the repatriation of the deceased students’ bodies to their families in India. The Consulate General of India in St. Petersburg is providing support to the bereaved families and ensuring that all necessary arrangements are made for the return of the mortal remains.

Jalgaon district collector Ayush Prasad expressed deep sorrow over the incident and highlighted the collaborative efforts being made to coordinate with Russian authorities for the safe return of the bodies. The surviving student is receiving medical and psychological care to cope with the traumatic experience.

The tragic loss of these young lives has sent shockwaves through the Indian community in Russia and back home. The consulate extended heartfelt condolences to the grieving families and emphasized the importance of providing support and assistance during this difficult time.
