Grand Junction Tennis Community Honors Legacy of Dick Bottinelli with Memorial Tournament

The Grand Junction tennis community is coming together to honor the legacy of Dick Bottinelli, a beloved figure known for his passion for the sport and dedication to supporting local tennis programs. After his recent passing, his family decided to give back to the community that meant so much to him by organizing the first Dick Bottinelli Memorial Family Doubles Tournament.

Dick Bottinelli, who discovered tennis in his 30s as a way to relieve stress, became a well-known and respected player in the Grand Valley. Even in his 90s, he continued to be actively involved in the local tennis scene and was a nationally ranked player. His love for the sport extended beyond his own playing days, as he generously supported Mesa County Tennis and its programs for junior players.

The tournament, taking place at the Elliott Tennis Center at Colorado Mesa University, will run from today through Sunday. Funds raised will go to the Dick Bottinelli Memorial Foundation, which supports Mesa County Tennis and provides scholarships for local children and teens to learn and play tennis. Participants and spectators alike are invited to join the event and connect with the Bottinelli family, who will be in attendance.

For Lucas Bottinelli, Dick’s grandson, the tournament holds special significance as a way to honor his grandfather’s memory and continue his legacy of love for the sport. Despite not having played tennis in a while, Lucas is excited to partner with his former coach and take to the court in tribute to his grandpa.

The tournament not only celebrates Dick Bottinelli’s life and contributions to the tennis community but also serves as a reminder of the positive impact sports can have on individuals and communities. Through this event, his family hopes to continue his legacy of support for tennis and inspire future generations of players.
