Remembering Suchitra Sen: The Legendary Actress Whose Last Hindi Film Was Banned During Emergency for This Reason

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Celebrating Suchitra Sen’s 93rd birth anniversary, we reflect on the 1975 political drama Aandhi, helmed by Gulzar and featuring Sen as Arti Devi. The film sparked controversy for its alleged resemblance to Indira Gandhi’s life, adding to its allure despite initial bans, eventually becoming a milestone in Sen’s illustrious career.

In 1975, renowned filmmaker Gulzar brought to the silver screen the political drama Aandhi, starring the legendary Suchitra Sen in the lead role of Arti Devi. Despite its cinematic brilliance, the film found itself embroiled in controversy, largely due to its perceived parallels with the life of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Ahead of Suchitra Sen’s 93rd birth anniversary on April 6, here’s looking back at the much-talked about Aandhi and what really happened.

Aandhi stirred the public’s curiosity with promotional posters teasing, “Watch the real life of your Prime Minister.” Many speculated that the character of Arti Devi bore resemblances to Indira Gandhi, although the storyline was more nuanced, drawing inspiration from various political figures including Tarkeshwari Sinha – an Indian politician and independence activist from Bihar.

However, the film faced hurdles even before its release. During the national emergency of 1975, under the governance of Indira Gandhi, Aandhi encountered obstacles, leading to a ban on its full release. Allegations of violating the Model Election Code of Conduct were cited, prompting the Election Commission to intervene, fearing potential damage to the reputation of the Congress party.

Following the defeat of the Congress party in the 1977 national elections and the rise of the Janata Party to power, Aandhi was granted clearance for release. The film eventually premiered on state-run television, marking a significant turn in its tumultuous journey.

For Suchitra Sen, Aandhi stood as a testament to her unparalleled talent, marking her last foray into Hindi cinema before retiring altogether in 1978. Paired opposite Bollywood heartthrob Sanjeev Kumar, Sen’s portrayal of Arti Devi remains one of her most celebrated performances, etching her name indelibly in the annals of Indian cinema.
