Richard M. Sherman, the legendary songwriter behind some of Disney’s most iconic songs, passed away at the age of 95. Known for his collaborations with Walt Disney and his older brother Robert Sherman, Richard’s music has left an indelible mark on generations of fans.
The Sherman brothers wrote over 200 songs for more than 50 Disney movies and TV shows, with their work on “Mary Poppins” being among the most celebrated. Their song “Chim Chim Cher-ee” earned them two Oscars in 1965 for Best Original Score and Best Original Song.
Disney CEO Bob Iger paid tribute to Richard, calling him a Disney Legend whose music has become a cherished part of our lives. The Sherman brothers were honored with the prestigious title of “Disney Legend” in 1990 for their contributions to the company.
In addition to their work on films, the Sherman brothers also created music for Disney theme park attractions, including the iconic “It’s a Small World” jingle. Their talent was recognized internationally when they won 1st Prize at the Moscow Film Festival in 1973 for their work on “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.”
