However, there were nine countries that voted against the Palestinian cause, including Israel, the United States, Hungary, Argentina, and the Czech Republic.

Israel’s stance against a Palestinian state has solidified in recent years, especially after the Hamas attacks on October 7th. The United States, despite advocating for a two-state solution, believes that direct negotiations between the parties are the best way forward.

Hungary’s support for Israel stems from mutual interests and a close relationship between Prime Minister Orban and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. Similarly, Argentina’s new populist President Milei has pledged unwavering support for Israel and plans to move the country’s embassy to Jerusalem.

The Czech Republic’s historical bond with the Zionist movement and shared values with Israel have led to its pro-Israel stance. Interestingly, all the Pacific Island nations – Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, and Palau – also voted with Israel. This support is attributed to the generous aid these nations receive from Israel, leading to a reciprocal relationship of support at international forums.

Israel’s targeted soft power diplomacy, including humanitarian aid and expertise in various fields, has helped secure votes and abstentions in its favor. However, on the issue of Palestine, global opinion was overwhelmingly against Israel in this particular UN vote.
