Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir is reportedly in talks with the Board for Cricket Control in India (BCCI) to take over as the head coach of the national team. According to a report by ESPNCricinfo, the BCCI has approached Gambhir to replace Rahul Dravid, who has decided not to reapply for the position.
Gambhir, who is currently serving as the mentor for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2024 season, has never coached a side on the domestic level. However, he has had success as a mentor for IPL teams in the past, guiding Lucknow Super Giants to the playoffs twice before joining KKR.
As a player, Gambhir was a key member of the Indian team that won the T20 World Cup in 2007 and the ODI World Cup in 2011. He also led KKR to two IPL titles during his tenure as captain from 2011 to 2017.
The BCCI has set the deadline for applications for the head coach position until May 27, with the new coach expected to take over after the T20 World Cup 2024. Other names being considered for the role include Justin Langer, Stephen Fleming, and VVS Laxman.
If Gambhir is appointed as the head coach, his tenure is expected to start from July 2024 and run until December 2027. The decision to approach Gambhir for the role showcases the BCCI’s confidence in his abilities to lead the Indian team to further success on the international stage.
