India’s traditional PC market showed resilience in the first quarter of 2024, with a total of 3.07 million units shipped, marking a 2.6 per cent year-over-year increase, according to a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC).
The report highlighted that while desktop and workstation categories saw growth of 10.1 per cent and 2.7 per cent year-over-year respectively, the notebook category experienced a slight decline of 1.7 per cent. However, there was a notable surge in demand for premium notebooks priced over $1,000, which saw a healthy 21 per cent year-over-year increase.
Bharath Shenoy, Research Manager at IDC India & South Asia, noted that the consumer segment continued to drive growth for the third consecutive quarter, albeit at a slower pace compared to previous quarters. The consumer segment saw a 4.4 per cent year-over-year growth, while the commercial segment increased by 1.3 per cent, boosted by a significant 56.9 per cent year-over-year growth in the government segment.
HP emerged as the market leader in Q1 with a 30.1 per cent share, dominating both the commercial and consumer segments. Dell secured the second spot with a 17.5 per cent share.
Analysts pointed out challenges in the commercial segment, citing reduced PC procurement from the IT/ITES sector and global accounts. However, they anticipate a recovery by the end of 2024, driven by refresh buying from the enterprise segment and the fast-tracking of local assembly of commercial notebooks to reduce imports in the coming quarters.
