Nepal Extradites Bangladeshi Citizen Accused in Murder of Bangladeshi MP in Kolkata
In a shocking turn of events, Kathmandu, Nepal has extradited a Bangladeshi citizen to India, who is one of the main accused in the brutal murder of Bangladeshi MP Anwarul Azim Anar in Kolkata last month. The suspect, Mohammad Siyam Hussain, was handed over to Indian authorities by Nepal’s Interpol branch on Monday morning after Nepal Police contacted him, as reported by MyRepublica.com news portal.
Hussain, who had fled to Nepal after the murder, was arrested from the border area of Nepal last Thursday. The 56-year-old Awami League MP Anar had gone missing on May 17 while in Kolkata for medical treatment. It was later revealed that he was allegedly murdered in a posh flat in the New Town area near Kolkata. The gruesome details of the murder include the chopping of the lawmaker’s body into 80 pieces and mixing them with turmeric before disposal at different locations.
It is suspected that Anar’s friend and business partner, Akhtaruzzaman, who is now a US citizen, plotted the murder. Despite Bangladesh police’s request for Hussain, he was handed over to Indian authorities due to his arrival from India. Nepal’s Interpol organization did not inform local police about Hussain’s arrest, and a team from Bangladesh’s Detective Branch had come to Kathmandu to pick him up.
This extradition has raised questions about the lack of an extradition treaty between Nepal and Dhaka, as well as the complexities of international crime investigations. The case continues to unravel as more details emerge about the heinous crime that shocked both Bangladesh and India.
