Qatar’s Travel and Tourism Sector Set to Reach Record High in 2024

Qatar’s travel and tourism sector is set to make a significant contribution to the economy in 2024, with a projected all-time high of QAR90.8 billion ($24.94 billion). This sector will make up 11.3 percent of the total Qatari economy and support over 334,500 jobs, according to the latest World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) 2024 Economic Impact Research (EIR).

The WTTC expects spending by international travelers to reach a record-high of QAR69.6 billion ($19.12 billion) in 2024, with domestic spending also expected to increase to QAR12 billion ($3.30 billion). Qatar’s efforts to enhance public-private collaborations have played a key role in boosting the travel and tourism sector, offering visitors diverse and immersive experiences.

Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, highlighted Qatar’s position as a leading destination in the Middle East, with the sector poised to break records in 2024. The WTTC projects that by 2034, Qatar’s travel and tourism sector will contribute over QAR135 billion ($37.08 billion) annually to the economy, employing close to 458,000 people across the country.

In 2023, Qatar’s travel and tourism sector saw significant growth, with a 31 percent increase in GDP contribution, reaching a record high of QAR81.2 billion. The sector also created over 20,300 new jobs, totaling nearly 286,000 nationwide, and domestic visitor spending reached a record high of QAR1.4 billion.

The WTTC also reported growth in the Middle East’s travel and tourism sector, with a 25 percent increase in 2023, reaching almost $460 billion. Looking ahead, the WTTC expects the region’s travel and tourism sector to continue to grow, reaching $507 billion and creating 8.3 million jobs. International and domestic spending are also projected to increase significantly.
