Report: Telecom Italia Sparkle to Deploy Quantum-Safe Data Protection on Network

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Telecom Italia Sparkle SpA is taking proactive steps to protect its network from potential cyber threats posed by quantum computers. The company has announced plans to deploy quantum-safe software across its entire infrastructure this year, starting with a successful trial run on a 2,000-kilometer stretch of fiber optic cable between Sicily and Germany.

With the rise of quantum computing technology, there is a growing concern among governments and businesses about the vulnerability of undersea cables to cyberattacks. Telecom Italia Sparkle SpA’s decision to implement advanced security measures comes in response to increasing demands from customers for enhanced protection against potential breaches.

Antonella Sanguineti, overseeing cloud and networking solutions at Sparkle, emphasized the importance of staying ahead of the curve in technology to meet the needs of their sophisticated clientele. The company’s collaboration with British cybersecurity firm Arqit Quantum Inc. to develop quantum-safe software demonstrates their commitment to staying at the forefront of cybersecurity innovation.

Cybersecurity expert Kevin Bocek praised Sparkle for being a “first mover” in implementing quantum-safe security measures, noting that this will likely become an industry standard in the near future. As the company prepares to expand these measures across its global network, including the US, Europe, the Americas, and Asia, they are setting a new standard for data protection in the telecommunications industry.

By taking proactive steps to safeguard their network against potential cyber threats, Telecom Italia Sparkle SpA is demonstrating a commitment to ensuring the security and integrity of their customers’ data in an increasingly digital world.
