Iran’s Revolutionary Guards seized an Israeli-linked cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, escalating tensions in the region. The Iranian state-run IRNA news agency reported that a Guards helicopter had boarded and taken the Portuguese flagged MSC Aries into Iranian waters.

The vessel, leased by international shipping line MSC from Gortal Shipping, an affiliate of Zodiac Maritime, is partly owned by Israeli businessman Eyal Ofer. This incident comes in the midst of heightened regional tensions following Israel’s campaign in Gaza and suspected Israeli airstrikes on Iran’s consulate in Syria.

US President Joe Biden warned Iran against attacking Israel, while Israel’s military spokesperson, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, stated that Iran would face consequences for further escalation. Iran had previously threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz if necessary, citing Israel’s presence in the UAE as a threat.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz condemned Iran’s actions as piracy and called for immediate sanctions on the Revolutionary Guards. He urged the European Union and the international community to declare the Guards as a terrorist organization.

The Joint Maritime Information Center advised caution for vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial energy route. The situation remains tense as Iran’s seizure of the cargo ship adds to the ongoing conflicts in the region.
