Research Shows that Adopting Healthy Habits Decreases Genetic Predisposition to Early Mortality by 62%

A recent study has shed light on the significant impact of healthy lifestyle choices on reducing the risk of early death, even for individuals with genetic predispositions. The study, conducted by researchers at Zhejiang University School of Medicine in China, found that adopting habits such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, and sufficient sleep can decrease the risk of premature death by a remarkable 62%.

Dr. Xue Li, the lead author of the study and dean of the School of Public Health at Zhejiang University School of Medicine, emphasized the importance of lifestyle choices in determining longevity. While genetics play a role in determining health outcomes, the study revealed that lifestyle factors can have a more substantial influence on life expectancy.

The research, which involved over 350,000 participants of European ancestry recruited between 2006 and 2010 and followed up until 2021, highlighted the correlation between healthy habits and longevity. Participants who adhered to a healthy lifestyle were found to have a significantly lower genetic risk of early death compared to those with unhealthy habits.

Published in the journal BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine, the study underscored the detrimental effects of unhealthy behaviors such as binge drinking, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, and poor dietary choices on life expectancy. Regardless of genetic predisposition, individuals with unhealthy habits were 78% more likely to die prematurely.

Each participant in the study was assigned a polygenetic risk score based on genetic factors that could impact lifespan. Additionally, they received a score reflecting their adherence to healthy lifestyle practices. Over a 13-year follow-up period, researchers observed the participants’ lifespan outcomes based on their genetic risk and lifestyle choices.

The findings of the study suggest that making positive lifestyle changes can counteract genetic predispositions for a shorter lifespan. By engaging in regular physical activity, consuming nutritious foods, getting adequate rest, and avoiding harmful habits like smoking and excessive drinking, individuals can significantly increase their life expectancy.

Dr. Xue Li highlighted the potential benefits of a healthy lifestyle in extending lifespan, particularly for individuals with genetic susceptibility to premature death. The data indicated that individuals with both genetic risk factors and unhealthy habits were twice as likely to die early compared to those with healthier lifestyles and no genetic risk.

Moreover, the study revealed that individuals with genetic predispositions could potentially add up to 5.5 years to their lifespan by adopting a healthy lifestyle. Dr. Li emphasized the importance of adhering to healthy habits in mitigating the negative impact of genetic factors on longevity.
