Arabella Willing, a dedicated environmentalist and Head of Conservation Outreach and Citizen Science at Emirates Nature – WWF, has been making waves in the UAE with her passion for conservation and environmental initiatives. Recently, she was recognized with a gold medal in the Environmental Initiator Category at the first edition of the Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Environmental Awards.

Arabella’s weekends are far from typical, as she spends her time organizing and leading various volunteering events and initiatives across the country. From planting native trees to monitoring wildlife, Arabella is deeply involved in the conservation efforts of the UAE.

One of the key programs she oversees is Leaders of Change, a membership that offers unique experiences and masterclasses for members to engage with scientists and conservationists. Additionally, the Connect with Nature initiative, in partnership with the Environment Agency, Abu Dhabi, provides free youth activities to promote environmental awareness.

Arabella’s work extends beyond organized events, as she has spearheaded campaigns like Notice Nature and collaborated with the Fujairah Environmental Authority to monitor the emirate’s biodiversity. Her dedication to conservation and community engagement is evident in her efforts to involve the public in environmental initiatives.

In the aftermath of a recent storm in the UAE, Arabella and her team are focused on clearing debris from natural areas and rebuilding damaged conservation sites. Their long-term goal is to enhance community resilience to natural disasters by harnessing the power of nature through planting native species and increasing vegetation cover.

Despite the demanding nature of her job, Arabella finds fulfillment in her work and is driven by her love for nature and wildlife. From coordinating volunteers to rescuing stranded whales and assisting lost whale sharks, Arabella’s passion for conservation knows no bounds.

As a third-generation expat with a diverse upbringing, Arabella’s international experiences have shaped her love for the outdoors and inspired her career in marine biology. Moving forward, she aims to instill a greater appreciation for nature in the UAE and promote the benefits of spending time outdoors for mental and physical well-being.

Arabella’s story is a testament to the power of individual action in creating positive change for the environment. Through her tireless efforts and unwavering dedication, she continues to inspire others to join the cause and make a difference in preserving the natural beauty of the UAE.
