Summer has officially arrived in the UAE, with temperatures soaring above 40°C as the ‘Al Shurtan’ constellation was spotted on May 12. Alongside the scorching heat, residents and beachgoers are being warned about dangerous currents known as ‘Al Sayura’, or the drawing current.
The President of the Emirates Astronomical Society, Ibrahim Al Jarwan, explained that the appearance of the ‘Al Shurtan’ constellation, which consists of two stars, coincides with rising temperatures exceeding 40°C and a drop in humidity below 30 percent during the day. The Emirates Astronomical Association announced the sighting of the constellation, stating that observers had seen it at dawn on Sunday, May 12, from the eastern side of the country.
Al Jarwan cautioned beachgoers about the formation of ‘Al Sayura’ currents, which have the potential to pull people into the sea. He also highlighted the intensification of dry and dusty northwesterly winds, known as ‘Barah’, until mid-July, followed by the strengthening of ‘Sumoom’, hot and dry winds.
While the Arabian Gulf experiences calm waters, turbulence is expected in the Arabian Sea and the northern Indian Ocean, marking the beginning of the tropical activity season. This season also signifies the first ripening of dates, figs, and mango, as well as the drying of most pastures. Additionally, the fishing season kicks off in the Arabian Gulf, with various species thriving, including barracuda, groupers, and sharks, and excess fish being preserved by salting.
As residents and tourists flock to the beaches to cool off from the sweltering heat, authorities are urging caution and vigilance. The dangerous ‘Al Sayura’ currents can be unpredictable and powerful, posing a serious risk to swimmers and beachgoers. It is essential to follow safety guidelines, such as swimming in designated areas with lifeguards present and avoiding swimming alone.
Furthermore, with the onset of the tropical activity season, it is crucial to stay informed about weather updates and potential hazards. The UAE’s diverse climate and geographical location make it susceptible to extreme weather events, including tropical storms and cyclones. Being prepared and aware of the risks can help mitigate the impact of these natural phenomena.
In conclusion, as summer heats up in the UAE, residents and visitors are reminded to stay safe and take precautions when venturing out to enjoy the sun and sea. By being mindful of the weather conditions, following safety guidelines, and staying informed, everyone can make the most of the summer season while staying out of harm’s way.
