The wildfire in Northwestern Manitoba that forced around 580 people to evacuate may soon be under control, allowing residents to return home by the weekend. Despite the fire near Flin Flon and Cranberry Portage not decreasing in size, Manitoba Wildfire Service’s acting director Earl Simmons remains optimistic.
Simmons stated that the fire near Cranberry Portage is approximately 80% contained, which is a positive development. The road through the area is open during the day, indicating progress in the containment efforts. The fire has affected several areas, including Cranberry Portage, Sourdough Bay, Whitefish Lake, Twin Lakes, and Schist Lake North, covering around 31,600 hectares.
Hydro has been restored to most customers in the impacted region, and with rain expected in the coming days, officials believe it will aid in extinguishing the fire. Simmons expressed hope that the precipitation will allow them to make significant advancements in controlling the blaze.
