Residents of Happy Valley-Goose Bay ordered to evacuate as explosions rock area threatened by fire

Police in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, N.L., have declared a state of emergency after “several explosions” occurred at the site of an uncontrolled fire near explosive material. The fire broke out on Friday evening at the north end of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, near abandoned buildings at the former airport. Emergency services are on the scene, working to extinguish the blaze.

Residents have been asked to stay at least a kilometre away from the area, extending from the end of the airport to the docks, as a safety precaution. Mayor George Andrews urged residents on the north side to evacuate immediately, while reassuring those in the Spruce Park area that there is no cause for concern. The RCMP has listed specific streets that are directly impacted by the emergency.

Monica Legge, a resident who was forced to evacuate, described the chaotic scene as she and her husband rushed to gather belongings and their pets before leaving their home. Concerned for her neighbors, she made sure to alert them of the evacuation order. The Happy Valley-Goose Bay SPCA had to relocate animals due to the proximity of the fire, but vice-president Bonnie Learning stated that all animals were safe and accounted for.

Premier Andrew Furey has offered full support to Mayor Andrews and the community, emphasizing the importance of public safety during this crisis. As residents anxiously await updates on the situation, they hope for a swift resolution and the safety of all involved.
