California retirees lose nearly $1 million in timeshare scam orchestrated by Mexican drug cartel known for cannibalism

Two California retirees, James, 76, and Nicki, 72, fell victim to a bizarre timeshare scam run by the Jalisco New Generation cartel (CJNG), losing nearly $1 million in the process. The scam, estimated to have defrauded hundreds of millions of dollars from Americans each year, targeted the couple as they were looking to sell their Lake Tahoe timeshare.

The scam began when James received a call from a supposed real estate agent named Michael, offering to buy their timeshare for upwards of $22,000. Despite initial skepticism from Nicki, James was convinced by Michael’s confidence and promises of a quick sale.

As the scam unfolded, James was asked to cover various fees totaling $50,000, with promises of reimbursement from a supposed Mexican investor. The couple eventually lost a staggering $890,000 to the fraudsters, forcing James to borrow $150,000 from his daughter and sell his childhood home to fund the payments.

The elaborate scheme, orchestrated by the CJNG cartel known for drug trafficking and gruesome acts of violence, preyed on the couple’s desire to offload their timeshare. Despite red flags and warnings from Nicki, James fell victim to the scam, losing his life savings in the process.

The couple’s story serves as a cautionary tale for other timeshare owners, highlighting the vulnerability of those desperate to sell their properties. American timeshare owners have collectively lost $288 million to similar scams in the last five years, with little recourse for recovery once the money is sent to Mexico.

James, reflecting on the ordeal, admitted his mistake in ignoring his wife’s concerns and falling for the elaborate ruse. The couple’s devastating loss underscores the need for increased awareness and vigilance when dealing with high-pressure sales tactics and offers that seem too good to be true.
