Reusable bags still being stockpiled despite adoption of solutions by big grocers, raising concerns among experts

Canada’s plastic bag ban has led to an unintended consequence: a surplus of reusable bags accumulating in homes and eventually ending up in landfills. Environmental researcher Tony Walker expressed concern over the overwhelming presence of these bags, stating, “We’re drowning in them, and we shouldn’t be.”

To address this issue, major Canadian grocers have implemented various solutions. Walmart recently launched a national recycling pilot program for their blue reusable bags, allowing customers to return them for recycling. Competitors like Sobeys and Loblaw Companies Ltd. have opted for recyclable paper bags for grocery delivery.

However, some environmental experts argue that paper bags also pose environmental challenges and that the focus should be on encouraging customers to reuse their existing reusable bags. Walker emphasized the importance of using reusable bags until they wear out, rather than accumulating more.

The federal government’s ban on single-use plastics, including checkout bags, has made single-use shopping bags scarce in Canada. Still, the proliferation of reusable bags, especially for grocery delivery, remains a concern.

Walmart’s new pilot project aims to tackle the issue by allowing customers to return unwanted reusable bags for recycling or donation to charity. While some critics question the effectiveness of this approach, others see it as a step in the right direction.

As the debate continues on the best way to address the reusable bag surplus, it is clear that finding sustainable solutions is crucial to reducing waste and protecting the environment.
