Revamping South African Universities to Ensure Inclusivity for Academics with Disabilities

In a groundbreaking study, Sibonokuhle Ndlovu, a lecturer at the University of Johannesburg, sheds light on the challenges faced by academics with disabilities in South African universities. With very little research conducted on this topic, Ndlovu’s study reveals the struggles and barriers that these academics encounter in their daily work.

One of the key findings of the study is the lack of data on the number of academics with disabilities working in South Africa’s universities. While government statistics show that a significant portion of the population has some form of functional difficulty, the exact number of academics with disabilities remains unknown. Despite this, it is clear that these individuals are a minority within the academic community.

Ndlovu’s research highlights two major challenges faced by academics with disabilities: inaccessible physical environments and difficulties in conducting research due to impairments. Many university facilities are not designed to accommodate individuals with disabilities, making tasks such as attending lectures or accessing research materials challenging.

Moreover, the study points out the limitations faced by academics with visual or hearing impairments in conducting research effectively. From interpreting facial expressions to using specialized equipment, these academics encounter obstacles that can hinder their professional development and research output.

While there are national and institutional policies in place to support academics with disabilities, Ndlovu emphasizes the need for a more inclusive approach. She calls for a transformation in university environments to truly cater to the needs of all individuals, including academics with disabilities. By involving these individuals in policy-making and addressing the specific challenges they face, universities can create a more inclusive and supportive academic community.
