CORTLAND — Five-time OHSAA state champion Caleigh Richards and the Maplewood distance runners showcased their dominance at the Trumbull County Track and Field Championships, held at Lakeview. Richards, known for her exceptional talent in long-distance running, swept the girls 800, 1600, and 3200-meter runs, in addition to leading her team to victory in the 4×800-meter relay.

Despite the grueling schedule, Richards displayed remarkable stamina and determination, finishing each race with impressive speed. Her father, Mike Richards, who also serves as the Maplewood girls track and field head coach, watched proudly as Caleigh excelled in each event.

In a particularly thrilling moment, Caleigh narrowly missed breaking a county record in the 800-meter run, finishing just half a second shy of the longstanding mark. Mike expressed immense pride in his daughter’s achievements, emphasizing her dedication and talent.

Meanwhile, Liberty’s Dwayne Moody shone in the sprinting events, claiming victory in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, as well as the 4×200-meter relay. Moody, a senior with aspirations of playing in the NFL, demonstrated his speed and skill on the track, earning three county titles in a single day.

Warren G. Harding emerged as the overall team champions, with both the boys and girls teams securing top honors. Niles’ Makiya Simpson and Girard’s Mia Malito also delivered standout performances, each capturing multiple event titles.

The competition at the Trumbull County Championships showcased the exceptional talent and determination of local track and field athletes, setting the stage for future success at the state level.
