Rishi Sunak Reflects on 6 Months of Conflict in Gaza

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has called for an end to the “terrible” war between Israel and Hamas, marking six months since the start of the conflict. Sunak emphasized the need for the release of hostages and the urgent delivery of aid to the region.

The Gaza war, which began on October 7, has resulted in the deaths of 1,170 people in southern Israel, mostly civilians, according to Israeli figures. Palestinian militants have also taken around 250 hostages, with over 30 reported dead.

Sunak described the conflict as the most appalling attack in Israel’s history, with wounds still unhealed and families mourning six months later. He stressed the importance of a humanitarian pause to establish a sustainable ceasefire and prevent further loss of life.

The British government has called for transparency and an independent review into the killing of seven aid workers in Gaza, three of whom were British. The deaths have prompted calls to suspend arms export licenses to Israel, with over $614 million worth of weapons sales approved by London since 2015.

In response to the crisis, the UK government announced the deployment of a Royal Navy ship to assist in aid deliveries to Gaza. A £9.7 million package was also allocated for humanitarian support in the region.

Foreign Secretary David Cameron emphasized the need for all options to be explored, including sea and air deliveries, to alleviate the suffering of vulnerable people in Gaza. The international community continues to work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
