Riverside High School Softball Team Clinches First State Title with Home Run Heroics

Riverside High School’s softball team made history on Saturday as they secured their first-ever Virginia Class 5 state championship with a 6-2 victory over Kellam High School. The Rams, known for their power hitting all season, relied on home runs from seniors Kaylie Avvisato and Charlotte Moore to propel them to victory.

With a season total of 40 home runs, including standout performances from Avvisato, Moore, and senior Hailey Peterson, the Rams showcased their long ball mentality in the championship game. Coach Kevin Bednoski praised his team’s ability to make solid contact early in the game, setting the tone for their offensive onslaught.

The road to the title was paved with dramatic moments, including Peterson’s walk-off grand slam in the semifinal game against Hickory. The team’s resilience and determination were on full display as they never let their guard down, even with a four-run lead in the final inning.

As Moore secured the final out of the season, the Rams erupted in celebration, savoring the sweet taste of victory. The team’s camaraderie and unwavering belief in each other were evident throughout the game, culminating in a well-deserved state championship.

With this historic win, Riverside High School’s softball team etched their names in the record books and solidified their place as one of the top teams in the state. The future looks bright for these talented athletes, who have proven that hard work, dedication, and a little bit of power hitting can lead to greatness on the softball field.
