In a groundbreaking move towards decarbonization in the maritime industry, CMB.TECH and Damen have announced the development of four ASD Tug 2812 FF-H2 model newbuilds equipped with dual-fuel hydrogen technology. These innovative tugs, boasting 80 tonnes bollard pull, will adhere to the strictest IMO Tier III and EU Stage V standards.

The vessels will be powered by four high-speed dual-fuel hydrogen engines, designed to minimize NOx and CO2 emissions. With modular storage systems for compressed hydrogen, each tug can carry up to 16 hydrogen bottles, storing 736 kg of pressurized hydrogen at 350 bar. This cutting-edge technology ensures safe storage below deck.

While the tugs will primarily operate on hydrogen, they are also capable of switching to traditional fuel if necessary and can run on 100% traditional fuel if required. The collaboration for these pioneering vessels was officially signed at Albwardy Damen in Sharjah during the Riviera Maritime Media’s 27th International Tug & Salvage Convention & Exhibition in Dubai.

CMB.TECH chief executive Alexander Saverys expressed his excitement about this milestone, emphasizing the importance of decarbonizing port operations with hydrogen-powered tugs. He highlighted the economic trend towards decarbonization and the inevitable shift towards green technologies in the shipping industry.

This partnership between CMB.TECH and Damen marks a significant step towards a more sustainable future for maritime operations. With a strong commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility, these dual-fuel hydrogen tugs are set to revolutionize the industry and pave the way for further advancements in green shipping technologies.
