RMIT’s Human Resource Management Program Takes Students on a Transcultural and Emotional Learning Journey

In a groundbreaking initiative, RMIT University’s undergraduate course in Human Resource Management (HRM) has taken a unique approach to experiential learning by integrating transcultural and emotional elements into the curriculum. Developed over the last few years, the program, delivered through the College of Business and Law’s School of Management and The Business School in Vietnam, aims to provide students with a holistic understanding of HRM practices.

In Semester 1 of 2024, RMIT partnered with the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) to offer students a hands-on experience in leadership management skills within the sports entertainment industry. The students were given a tour of the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground and engaged in a Q&A session with MCC’s People and Culture team. They also participated in interactive group activities designed to simulate real-world HRM challenges.

Dr. Marco De Sisto, Senior Lecturer in HR Management and Industrial Relations, highlighted the emotional challenges faced by students during the program. He emphasized the importance of working in multicultural teams and leveraging cultural insights to solve complex HRM issues.

Dr. Ying Zhou, Senior Learning and Teaching Specialist, praised the integrated approach of the initiative, which combines industry engagement, transcultural immersion, and emotional learning. The ‘Live-Local-Think-Global’ initiative has been successfully implemented in Australia, Vietnam, and Singapore, with partnerships with leading multinational companies.

The program’s success was recognized in 2023 when it won the RMIT Vice-Chancellor’s Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning. The cross-functional team behind the initiative is committed to continuing to prepare students for successful careers in HRM through innovative and impactful learning experiences.
