Robbie Fletcher has been confirmed as the new education commissioner for the Kentucky Department of Education by the state Senate. With a vote of 36-1, Fletcher’s appointment was approved on the final day of session, with only one senator, Donald Douglas, voting against it.

Fletcher, who currently serves as the superintendent of Lawrence County Schools, brings nearly 30 years of experience in public education to his new role. He will officially assume the position on July 1, following a career that has seen him serve as a teacher, principal, and superintendent.

During the confirmation process, Fletcher expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him by parents and the responsibility that comes with educating their children. He also emphasized his commitment to improving student outcomes, particularly in math and reading, through formulative assessments tailored to individual student needs.

The confirmation of Fletcher comes after the resignation of former commissioner Jason Glass last fall. Many senators voiced their hopes for a better working relationship between the new commissioner and the legislature, with some expressing concerns about past communication issues.

Fletcher, a lifelong Kentuckian, expressed his support for the state’s education budget and his dedication to ensuring that every child receives a safe, well-rounded, and loving education. As he prepares to take on his new role, Fletcher is focused on putting student needs first and working towards improving educational outcomes for all Kentucky students.
