The Biden campaign made a bold move on Tuesday by dispatching actor Robert De Niro and two former U.S. Capitol Police officers to hold a news conference outside the Manhattan courthouse where former President Donald J. Trump’s trial was concluding. Despite initially refraining from commenting on Trump’s criminal charges, the Biden campaign’s decision to send surrogates to the courthouse during the trial was a clear statement.
De Niro accused Trump of engaging in “coward’s violence” after the 2020 election, directing a mob to do his bidding. While the news conference did not directly address Trump’s Manhattan trial for falsifying business records, it aimed to draw attention to his actions leading up to the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021.
The Trump campaign quickly responded, criticizing the Biden campaign for turning the trial into a campaign event. Senior adviser Jason Miller called De Niro a “washed-up actor” and accused the Biden campaign of making a political mockery of the criminal case.
Despite the backlash, the Biden campaign defended its actions, stating that the news conference was held due to the presence of the national media at the courthouse. The intense scrutiny and heckling from demonstrators outside the courthouse underscored the high stakes and political tensions surrounding Trump’s multiple pending criminal cases.
As the trial continues to unfold, the clash between the Biden and Trump campaigns adds another layer of drama to an already unprecedented situation of a major party’s presidential candidate awaiting a felony verdict.
