Romania Open to Sending Patriot Missile System to Ukraine, Says President Iohannis
Romanian President Klaus Iohannis announced on Tuesday that he is open to discussing the possibility of sending a Patriot missile system to Ukraine. This decision comes after German appeals to European Union and NATO member states to bolster Ukraine’s air defenses.
Following appeals by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, EU governments were urged to supply more defense systems to Kyiv. Germany has pledged an additional Patriot battery, while Spain has committed to delivering anti-aircraft Patriot missiles.
President Iohannis stated, “There has been a discussion about who can send Patriot systems to Ukraine over the last few weeks.” He further mentioned that he is open to the discussion and will consult with the Supreme Defence Council to determine Romania’s contribution.
Romania signed a $4 billion deal to acquire Patriots in 2017, with the first shipment delivered in 2020. Although Romania currently only has one battery in operation, discussions are underway regarding another battery that is nearly operational.
President Biden expressed his appreciation for Romania’s commitment to security in NATO’s east and its defense investments. The White House also acknowledged Romania’s support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.
Romania, a NATO member since 2004, shares a border with Ukraine and has experienced Russian drone activity near its territory. President Iohannis also discussed his bid for NATO’s top job with President Biden, reaffirming his candidacy despite strong support for another candidate.
The potential deployment of the Patriot missile system to Ukraine underscores Romania’s commitment to regional security and solidarity with its allies.
