The RPI men’s tennis team secured their third consecutive Liberty League Championship title in a thrilling match against Vassar on Sunday at the Reis Tennis Center in Ithaca, N.Y. Despite trailing 2-1 after doubles, RPI (17-1) fought back to claim a 5-2 victory and earn the Liberty League’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.
The first doubles team of Aiden Drover-Mattinen and Andy Zhu got RPI off to a strong start with an 8-3 win, but Vassar responded with a victory in the second doubles match. The third doubles match went to a tiebreaker, with Jay Wong and Pedro Cattaruzzi securing the win for Vassar and giving them a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
RPI dominated the singles matches, with Drover-Mattinen, Zhu, and Tsubi Okada all securing wins to push RPI ahead 4-2. Vassar put up a fight in the remaining matches, but ultimately fell short as Kubiak was forced to retire due to injury and the other matches were halted.
Andy Zhu, who had an outstanding performance throughout the tournament, was named the Most Outstanding Performer. With this victory, RPI continues their impressive streak of success and looks ahead to the NCAA Division III Championship, where they will aim to make their mark on the national stage.
