Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has recently completed extensive sidewalk maintenance works across the emirate as part of its commitment to upholding the highest standards of asset sustainability and enhancing customer happiness. The project, carried out under the Preventive Maintenance Plan 2023, covered over 80,000 square meters of various areas in Dubai, including residential, tourist, commercial, economic, and coastal areas.

The maintenance works included repairing sidewalks for pedestrians, crosswalks, service roads, and combined use for pedestrians and cyclists. The scope of the project also addressed issues such as subsidence, erosion, damage, and the loss of tiles on sidewalks due to improper use or environmental impacts.

Engineer Hussein Al-Banna, CEO of Traffic and Roads Agency at RTA, highlighted the importance of these maintenance works in preserving street assets, ensuring durability, safety, and sustainability, and maintaining the aesthetic look of the city. He emphasized that the project aims to enhance the safety of pedestrians and sidewalk users in line with global standards, contributing to RTA’s vision of becoming the world leader in seamless and sustainable mobility.

Al-Banna also mentioned RTA’s use of sophisticated maintenance technologies to monitor and manage assets effectively, ensuring the structural conditions of road assets and the highest safety for road users. With the rapid urban expansion and development in Dubai, the project plays a crucial role in fostering well-being for both residents and visitors.

Looking ahead, RTA plans to increase the scope of preventive maintenance work on sidewalks by at least 10% in 2024 compared to the previous year. The plan includes maintenance works at various locations such as Al Wuheida, Al Khabisi, Al Twar 2, Al Sufouh 1, 2nd December Street, Jumeirah Street cycling track, Al Rigga, Al Muraqabat roads, Dubai Marina cycling tracks, intersections along Jumeirah Street, and service sidewalks on Sheikh Zayed Road.

RTA is committed to implementing necessary safety measures to ensure the safe and smooth flow of pedestrian traffic during sidewalk maintenance and rehabilitation works across the emirate. By prioritizing the well-being and safety of all road users, RTA continues to demonstrate its dedication to providing top-class infrastructure and mobility solutions in Dubai.

The completion of the sidewalk maintenance works reflects RTA’s ongoing efforts to enhance the city’s infrastructure, promote sustainable transportation, and create a safe environment for pedestrians and cyclists. As Dubai continues to grow and evolve, RTA’s proactive approach to maintenance and asset sustainability plays a vital role in shaping the future of transportation in the emirate.
